AS I WOKE UP THE NEXT morning, I felt something pressed against my face, and it took me a second to realize that it was the note Jake had left me the day before. Great. I’d smudged it in my sleep, wrinkled it badly as I’d tossed and turned, and now parts of it were hard to read. Pressing it out as best I could with the flat of my hand, it was better but still not great. I knew anyone else would think I’d lost my mind when I got out my iron and pressed the note, flattening it carefully so I could preserve it. Thank goodness it was two forty-five in the morning, when no one could see what I was up to, standing there at the ironing board in my pajamas, pressing a piece of paper.

It looked pretty good by the time I finished it, so I set the iron aside and laid the note carefully on the kitchen table. As I got dressed and had a quick bite to eat, I started thinking about Samantha Peterson and Gray Blackhurst. What had happened to strike down two members of the mayor’s staff? Had something happened at city hall to put their lives in danger, or were the deaths of a more personal nature? There couldn’t be anything random about them, that was for sure. I hated coincidences, and this would have been the mother of all of them, even if it turned out to be true.

I was heading for the front door when something nagged at the back of my mind. I kept thinking I’d left something undone as I scraped a light dusting of snow from my Jeep’s windshield, and I was nearly to the donut shop when it hit me.

I’d forgotten to unplug the iron! I backed into Grace’s driveway and turned around. As I pulled back into my driveway, I saw something that I had clearly missed earlier.

There was a set of footsteps in the snow leading up to my front porch, and I wasn’t a hundred percent positive that they hadn’t been there when I’d left so recently.

Apparently someone had decided to pay me a visit during the night. The question was, were they still there, lingering somewhere in the woods, or were they now inside my cottage, waiting for me to come back in?

The door was securely bolted, and I could see the steps leading off into the woods, so whoever had been there was now gone.

At least I hoped so.

There was a crude note taped to the front of the door, though.

It said simply, “STOP.”

It wasn’t much of a message, but it was enough to make the point.

Apparently someone was unhappy with my investigation, and they were giving me a warning.

It was just too bad that I didn’t respond to things like that. They only made me more determined than ever to find what, or in this case who, I was looking for.

I went inside and thought about what I should do next after I checked my iron.
